Seniors take charge

New Ulm being led by a senior-heavy team in high school basketball.

High school basketball has been a significant part of New Ulm for the past few years because it has recently been a successful program. A lot of that success can be attributed to the 2024 senior class.

This current senior class has been praised before they were even close to high school. The varsity team has eight seniors, one junior, and three sophomores this year.

“I have been with this team and known many of these guys all my life,” said Ayden Jensen, a Senior on the New Ulm basketball team. Almost all the players have been together since 4th grade and have been a promising team from middle to high school.

All the seniors play a significant role on the team to help in any way possible. “One of my favorite things that New Ulm believes is dominating your role,” Zach Fischer said. This means that every single player on the team has a role or purpose that they should be excellent at.

The starting varsity team is all seniors now. Still, previously, all of these players started at different points, with Colton Benson and James Osbourne becoming varsity players in their first year. In sophomore year, Ayden Jensen, Easton Clark, and Nate Firle were introduced to the big lights. In junior year, Will Fossen, Zach Fischer, and Gavin Epper were brought up.

They have won the conference championship for two years straight and are going for a three-peat. Their first game was December 1 against Rocori, which ended in a big team win to start the season and get them rolling on track.

The players have done great things, like Colton Benson being All Journal Player of the Year and making the All-Big South Conference team last year. James Osbourne made All Journal Second Team and All-Big South Conference team, and Nate Firle made All Journal Third Team and was an honorable mention for All-Big South Conference.
