New Ulm High School musical In action

Lights, Camera, Action!

The clock ticks as the day gets closer: The Hunchback of Notre Dame is making its way to New Ulm High School theatre. The production has more than 50 students. Every student has their own very important role in helping to ensure the show will go on.

Stage crew for the musical working to get set pieces prepared

There are two major groups within the theatre, the actors and the crew. Students who participate in the crew construct set, do makeup and hair, cue sounds and lights and take care of props. These students work alongside actors and directors to make the show as amazing as they can.

Sophomore Tyson Goold is the stage manager, which means that behind the curtain he’s the man in charge.

“I think backstage is going good. I think the set is looking good. We have a lot of working pieces that collaborate with the show and unexpected pieces that are fun,” said Goold

Alongside the crew, actors are giving the show life as they head out to the stage and bedazzle the audience. While the crew is working on preparing the stage they are warming up their voices, running their dance routine and memorizing lines.

Each actor is specifically selected by director Carrisa Cowles. “It’s going well, every year we figure out new ways to do things and every year we make it better. This year is proving true,” Cowles said.

Opening day is Thursday, Nov. 16, with shows continuing on Friday and Saturday.

Previous shows like The Addams Family have been very popular with many people coming to show support and watch the production.

“I’m very excited to see the musical because there’s so much talent,” said Paula Clark, high school media specialist and avid theatergoer.
