In a thrilling quest for basketball greatness, the New Ulm Eagles basketball team faces the pivotal challenge of clinching a historic three-peat conference championship.
This year’s boy’s basketball team has a lot at stake. This team wants to win another conference championship to complete the back-to-back-to-back conference championship, which has never been done before in school history.
During the off-season, the basketball team would have summer practices on Monday and Wednesday mornings and Tuesdays and Thursdays at night. “I liked how we got the opportunity to keep grinding over the off-season, which has helped out my game for the new season,” senior Zach Fischer said. The basketball team also went to Waconia for a pacesetter tournament and traveled to Mankato multiple Wednesdays for a Bethany league.
This conference championships streak started with the 2021-2022 squad. This squad had an impressive season with a 22-7 record and went 9-1 in conference play, losing a close game in the section finals.
The second team to keep the streak alive was the 2022-2023 team. This team only had two seniors, but the two seniors played a significant role in winning the conference championship. This squad had a record of 21-6 and went 9-0 in conference play, ending the season in a tough loss in the section semifinals.
Multiple seniors on this year’s team have been part of the conference championship streak. “It’s a big goal of ours to accomplish this year, and we’re gonna grind every day to achieve our goal at the end of the year,” senior Colton Benson said. The Eagles are looking to have an impressive year and to be ready by March to make a run in the postseason.
