A group of students from New Ulm High School went out on Oct. 18, 2023, at around 7:30 p.m., to launch the start of the new Astronomy club!
Students carried many telescopes to different areas around the school depending on where it was most clear from clouds and where there were stars or a planet. Unfortunately, it was fairly cloudy so only a few stars were seen which was something everybody was still interested in.
Throughout the week before going out to look through the telescopes, students put together eight out of ten telescopes the school owns. Not only are students looking outside the earth but they are also learning how to build telescopes, which is a pretty cool talent that not just anyone has! The club has been in the works for a long time now. “I was always interested in it and noticed that Mrs. Brock had telescopes and that it was an easy way to get students interested in it,” Senior Sophia Furth said.
“We had the telescopes that weren’t getting much use. And when I studied physics I also studied astronomy and wanted to get kids that are interested to see outside the earth,” said Mrs. Brock, NUHS science teacher extraordinaire.
Students are looking forward to going out early in the morning on Nov. 2, 2023, to get a clear look at the planets and enjoy some hot chocolate to keep warm with the fast approach of winter.
