On Wed. Oct. 11th, 2023 the New Ulm FFA chapter met in the auditorium at the high school and prepared to go out a little later in the morning for the annual corn drive.
The corn drive is something that happens each year. Many schools in MN go out into the community with gravity wagons, trucks, tractors, or even semis and tell the farmers or donatiers a little bit about the corn drive and where the proceeds go. The proceeds of the corn drive go to Camp True Friends, a camp that helps those with disabilities. Last year the New Ulm FFA chapter raised close to 39 thousand dollars that all went to the camp.
“I think it’s great. We’re able to help out as many people as we do with the donations we have because it seems like what we do is so small but when you add up all of us contributing together, it’s such a big piece for everyone at Camp True Friends,” said senior Sierra Wersal when asked about her opinion and the overall cause for the corn drive.
With farmers being in the fields trying to get their crops out before the upcoming rain the corn drive was a success for New Ulm, with one farmer even telling a group to “get a semi,” partially filling it with a very generous donation of beans.
Although some groups had better success than others, all the groups had a great time with the beautiful fall weather and not having to go to school. Something about going out for one day and raising so much money just really makes one feel accomplished.
When asked about the corn drive, sophomore Lanhi Kaupa said, “It was my first year and I feel like we did pretty good, could have done maybe a bit better but overall it was very fun and I enjoyed it.”
