For the first time since 2003, the New Ulm Eagles football team has won 5 games and finished the 2023 season with a winning record. Since 2003, New Ulm had many coaches come and go, but in the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Derek Lieser led the team as the head coach. The town adopted the phrase “In Lieser we trust.”
After the 1-7 result of the 2022 season, the people of New Ulm had their doubts. But as the season progressed, the team was able to earn back their faith. Senior Ethan Lieb, the team’s kicker, Offensive lineman, and linebacker was happy with how the season turned out. “It’s been great. We’ve shocked not only the school but a large portion of the state,” he said.
The Eagles finished the season with a winning record of 5-3. The Eagles will now play Saint Peter again on Tuesday, Oct. 24. If the Eagles can beat the Saints again, it will be the first time since 1994 that the Eagles have won a home playoff game and possibly the first time ever that the Eagles have been undefeated on their home turf.
