For the third year in a row, the NUHS boys basketball team is conference champs. Do you know what that means? Another year added to the New Ulm boys basketball banner in the NUHS gymnasium.

The 2023-2024 New Ulm boys basketball team is one of the best basketball teams in New Ulm High School’s history. Throughout the boy’s season, many goals were accomplished, including: Colton Benson reaching 2,000 career points and becoming the city of New Ulm’s all-time boys’ leading scorer; James Osborne reaching 1,000 career points; many come-from-behind wins working together as a team to get the victory; and three-peating as Big South Conference section champs.

“It’s a real cool feeling knowing that we’re the first team to ever win three in a row is a special thing. It’s fun to see this team go into the record books and be right up there with some of the great teams that came before us,” senior Colton Benson said.

James Osborne added,  “It’s rewarding knowing we are making history in multiple different ways this season, one of the big ones being conference champions three years in a row.”

The team’s ultimate goal for the season was to make it to the state tournament, however, they fell just short of that goal by losing 47-67 in the section championship game to Mankato East, ending their season with a 21-8 record. The New Ulm boys basketball team will graduate eight seniors this May but with the leadership from this year’s seniors, this team will come back strong and will work to win another conference championship next season.
