Gargoyle Masks In the making

Sculpting and glazing the masks of your imagination
Gargoyle Masks In the making

Pottery and sculpture class with Ms. Page is about making a mask sculpture of whatever you imagine.

All the students in the class are working on multiple sculpting projects: wind chimes, mouse doors, and other interesting things.

The project is inspired by the Gothic architecture and is based on the Washington Cathedral because there are multiple different gargoyle projects in the cathedral.

“Different types of gargoyles tell a story,” Ms Page said.

The project is “focused on creating a face, creating a story with more of an architectural structure,” she said.

Page said the project is a relief and freestanding sculpture project aimed to give more of a story to the creation that you choose. It uses previous techniques that the class has learned, such as pinch pots, slabs, or coils, into one project.

“The creativity of what students have for their first big projects,”  Ms Page said, was one of her favorite things about the Gargoyle mask project.

There are a lot of artistic choices and freedom with that project. Page said she likes “being able to see different people’s personalities come out with the project.”
