Under the sound of cheering families, members of the high school track team have taken on a role much bigger than running races and winning medals. This season, the athletes have stepped forward as mentors and leaders, helping organize and guide elementary and middle school track participants during local meets.
From warming up younger runners to explaining drills and events for some first-time competitors, the high school athletes have become an important part of the next generation of runners.
“We remember what it felt like to be younger and unsure at meets,” Kaden Schaefer said. “Now we get the chance to help those kids feel confident and excited about track.”
The first meet the high school team helped with was the middle school track meet, where many schools came to compete with New Ulm. Each high school athlete had a unique role in timing, measuring, announcing, and other ways to help organize the event.
“When everyone is doing their part, it helps the event run much more smoothly and is more enjoyable for everyone,” Isabelle Longtin said.

Another event the high schoolers stepped in to help with was the Eaglet, where kindergarten to 3rd grade atheletes come to explore and try out each event in track. “They learn so much in so little time,” Joey Wise said. Some athletes help line up participants at starting areas and time the finishers, while others demonstrate drills and cheer on younger competitors after races and field events.
Head coach Brian Lundgren says the leadership shown by the high school students has made a noticeable difference. “The younger kids look up to them. When older athletes encourage them, it builds confidence. It also teaches them what being an Eagle is all about.”
Parents are more than welcome to watch and enjoy their little one run around and burn energy, or their middle schooler progress toward becoming a better, more successful athlete.
Beyond improving meet organization, the experience has helped the high school athletes develop leadership, communication, and responsibility skills that extend beyond the track.
As the season continues, the impact of the mentorship program is already becoming clear. The future is also shining brighter than ever for New Ulm Track and Field.
