Imagination unleashed: monsters come alive

A creative collaboration between Jefferson Elementary second graders and Mr. Page’s high school pottery class brings their monsters to life.
Imagination unleashed: monsters come alive

Bright red spikes, bulging eyes, and scaly tails; what started as a second grader’s marker sketch is now taking shape in clay just up the hill at the high school. Inside the art room, imagination is being rebuilt, one sculpture at a time.

Students in Mr. Page’s second-hour pottery class are partnering with second graders at Jefferson Elementary School by recreating their monster drawings as clay sculptures. After selecting a drawing, each high school student works to bring the monster to life, with the finished pieces eventually returned to the young artists who created them.

Clay, sketches, and laughter fill the room as students mold, carve, and create their pieces. Each sculpture reflects a different idea; some silly, some scary, all unique.

Students work at their stations with a variety of tools, carefully carving, cutting, and shaping their creations. Piece by piece, they attach limbs, teeth, and hair, slowly bringing the once-flat marker drawings to life.

“The most fun part is getting to see what the kids created,” Calli Koop said. However, she explained that one of the biggest challenges is shaping the monsters correctly and ensuring all the parts fit together, which requires patience and attention to detail.

Ms. Page added that the project’s goal goes beyond making sculptures. “Trying to challenge the students’ minds from doing from 2D to 3D,” Ms. Page said, explaining that the project is designed to push students to think creatively and transform drawings into three-dimensional art.

Once the sculptures are complete, the plan is to deliver them to Jefferson Elementary, either by high school students visiting during the makeup final time or by inviting the second graders to see them in person.

Either way, the moment will be exciting, as the second grader’s finally get to see their drawings transformed into real, physical sculptures.

What began as simple drawings will soon return as something more. This story is proof that creativity can grow when students of different grades come together to build something unforgettable.
