With just weeks left before graduation, Addison Olson, a senior at New Ulm High School, is tuning up for more than just commencement. The 18-year-old musician, known for his passion for guitar and songwriting, is preparing to move to Duluth this fall to pursue his dream of building a career in music.

Olson, who has been active in school music programs and local performances, said his interest in music started early but grew more serious during high school. “I realized this is what I want to do long-term,” he said. “It’s something I can’t imagine not having in my life.”

Teachers describe Olson as hardworking, creative, and driven, traits he hopes will help him succeed as he transitions to college life on Minnesota’s North Shore. He plans to study engineering while exploring performance opportunities in Duluth’s vibrant arts community.

“It’s a big step,” Olson said. “But I’m excited. Duluth has an amazing music scene, and I’m ready to be a part of it.”

As he counts down the final days of his senior year, Olson says he feels grateful for the support he’s received in New Ulm and eager to see what comes next.

Olson has built a reputation as an aspiring musician with both talent and ambition. Whether he’s writing original songs in his bedroom or collaborating with friends in informal jam sessions, music has become the center of his life.

“I’ve always loved it,” Olson said. “But during high school, I realized it’s more than a hobby. It’s the thing that motivates me, the thing I want to keep improving at.”

Those qualities, Olson hopes, will serve him well as he prepares to move to Duluth this fall for college. He plans to major in music and get involved in the city’s lively arts scene, which includes frequent live performances, student showcases, and emerging independent artists.

“Duluth feels like the right place,” Olson said. “There’s a really supportive music community up there. I’m excited to learn from other musicians, meet new people, and see how far I can take this.”

For Olson, leaving New Ulm comes with mixed emotions. He says he’ll miss the tight-knit community, his teachers, and the friends who encouraged him to keep pursuing music. But the prospect of new opportunities and an environment where he can grow as both a student and an artist keeps him looking ahead.

“I’m grateful for everything I’ve had here,” he said. “New Ulm gave me a place to start. Now I’m ready for the next step.”
