New Ulm High School is offering new online classes this year as part of student registration.

These classes need at least 10 students to sign up, or they won’t run, and students would be placed in the in-person class instead.

According to counselor Mr. Ziemer, the school decided to offer a wide range of classes and “let the students dictate what it is that they’re most interested in taking.”

Ziemer also said there has been a slight increase in interest, with students “looking forward to the flexibility of it” and trying a new format.

The online classes will be scheduled during zero hour, giving students an open hour to complete their work without live class meetings, while teachers remain available for help during and after the school day.

If a student earns a C or higher, the grade will be marked as a P for assigning in Campus and will not affect their GPA, but anything lower will count toward it.

“Success in online classes depends on the student,” Ziemer said, explaining that a motivated student usually does quite well, while others may struggle without good time management.

The NUHS administration does not expect online classes to replace in-person ones, since many students still prefer direct access to teachers and support.

Overall, the new classes are meant to give students more flexibility while still keeping learning connected to NUHS.
