An interesting sight to see walking through the halls is Mr. Dennis’s third-period psychology class learning to trust their senses while walking around blindfolded.
Following students Kyla Freeman and Arya Goblirsch, we watched as Kyla walked using the senses she had left after being blindfolded, and left with the guidance from Arya to navigate the halls of New Ulm High School.
Laughs, confused voices, and looks of concentration filled the hallway as the activity challenged their confidence in everyday perception.
Once the students returned to Mr. Dennis’s classroom, the blindfolds came off, and the class switched to visual-distortion goggles that altered depth, balance, and focus.
“It’s almost more fun for me to watch the students experiment than it is for them to be in the experiment,” Mr. Dennis said.
The experience helped students understand how easily the brain can be tricked. The lesson was a fun and memorable, hands-on way to teach perception and awareness in psychology.
