The New Ulm High School Book Club offers students a space to connect over reading and discussion during meetings held after school in the media center, attracting students who are interested in sharing ideas and perspectives through books. This is the first year they are doing a book club.
The Club enables students to vote on books, engage in discussions, and participate in activities related to literature.
“Book Club encourages students to talk about books that matter to them,” Media Specialist Ms. Formica said.
Book Club is a safe space for many students, allowing them to share their book choices and discover new books to read. It brings a positive light to the school.
Along with Book Club, there is Battle of the Books. There are many different books discussed in Battle of the Books, including Twelfth Knight by Follmuth, We Were Liars by Lockhart, Dancing at the Pity Party by Feder, The Fault in Our Stars by Green, The Poet by Acevedo, and Family Style by Pham. There are two to four people per team, who discuss each book and compete in a competition with a winning prize.
Formica encourages students to join, as it can be a fun way to connect with other students through shared interests, such as books.
“It’s a great way to meet new people who have similar interests,” she said.
Formca said the club creates a stronger sense of community at New Ulm High School.
