The New Ulm High School’s Annual Halloween costume contest took place last Friday during the school day.
Students were able to dress in their Halloween costumes this year and enter the contest. The costume contest had two categories, solo and group. Both categories had prizes for the top three winners.
The prizes this year involved candy and money, the amount varying depending on what place you got in the contest. “Individual gets $15 and some candy,” Student Council Advisor Mr. Mans said. “Second place is $5 and some candy. Third place, candy. First place for the group is $30 to split between everybody and candy. Second place $10 and candy, and third place is just candy.”

Students were sent an email advising them about the contest a day prior to it happening. If students didn’t see the email, there were also slides on the TVs that are around the school that students could see. Students could also be advised about the contest through the daily announcements that the office sends out to the students.
“Otherwise, people, if they hear about it, they can always ask any student council member because they should have all the information,” Mr. Mans said. Student council members are always around the school, so students shouldn’t have any trouble finding a member.
Ties can happen, but it’s unlikely. The teachers vote on who they think has the best costume, and they can vote multiple times for who they think has the top three best costumes. If there were ever a tie to happen between second-place winners, the second-place prizes would be given out to both participants.
“Some of the student council funds that we raise through various things like froyo and homecoming, like coronation entrance fees and other stuff like that – the dance as well, goes into our budget that we’ll give back to the students through prizes,” Mr. Mans said.
None of the High School funding went into the prizes for the contest; the activities and events that the school hosts are enough to fund the contest.
