NUHS clay target team is offering something new. With things taking a turn for the 2025 shooting season, the new coaching staff is offering Skeet shooting.

Every Monday and Wednesday night, you can find the members of the shooting team down at the Sioux Valley Gun Range. Skeet is a type of shooting game. There is a team of 5 people who shoot 8 different stations. These stations go “around the arc” and the last station is in the middle of the half circle. Each shooter shoots 4 times at Stations 1,2,6 and 7. The rest of the stations are just 2 shots. If the shooter doesn’t miss one bird the whole way around the arc and at the middle station, they will only shoot 24 times. But if you miss at any of the stations you can have the option to shoot one extra shot to keep your perfect score.

Shooter Dylan Armstrong said that there are a lot of “new things to learn and different ways to track the bird compared to shooting trap.” Armstrong said that he likes to shoot skeet more than trap as he finds it ” something new and more challenging.” Armstrong is currently the top shooter on the trap team and not far behind from being the top shooter on the skeet team. “Practice makes perfect,” he said.

Members of the shooting team are very excited to keep shooting and getting better at something new. Many of the shooters have never shot skeet before, and “it is definitely a learning curve,” said Casey Koop. Koop is a senior at New Ulm High School and has been a part of the NUHS clay target team since his 7th-grade year. Koop is a Veteran shooter and one of the top shooters on the skeet and trap team. He said that he was beyond excited when he found out there was going to be an opportunity to shoot skeet this year through the school team.

After talking with many of the shooters that are shooting skeet this year they are all very grateful for the opportunity to shoot skeet and can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store.
