It’s a numbers game at New Ulm High School. As seniors are graduating and moving on to college to make a difference in the world, the National Honor Society is giving them a chance to take the initiative. Over the last week members of the NHS have set up a booth in the lunchroom to give students their first taste of the political world.

One of the most vital parts of our democracy, voting has always been a piece of meat dangled in front of students heads. Although not so for one as young as a 5th grader; The meat has always tempted those juniors and seniors who wish the world to change but never had the chance. One form. One simple form is separating those wishful for change and the first step to being a politically active citizen. Although the next presidential election is still almost a year and a half away, it is only one election of dozens of others held in New Ulm every other year. “The presidential election is not the only important election. We have to play our part in our civic duties.” Said Emma Maudal, one of the organizers of NUHS’s voter registration service.

The main goal of the NHS’s voter registration service is obviously voter turnout. According to the U.S census, the last presidential election saw over 5,000 people over the age of 18 not participate in Brown County. With so many people not even contributing to the biggest election in our democracy, what does that say about our less popular elections? With this new service, the National Honor Society aims for a more politically involved populace and a quicker and easier process when it comes to elections in general.

Nori Ness, a supporter, and organizer of the voter registration service says, “We already had almost 50 people register. Mostly because this service is very convenient.” With a mere five minutes, your driving license or social security number, and a willingness to jot down your personal information you can be registered to vote and ready to give your two cents in our local, state, and national elections.
