Every year the varsity track team heads off to MSU for an indoor meet. This particular meet is called Time Trials, and it is always the first meet of the year. During this meet all athletes participate in a few events, four being the maximum, just as practice for the upcoming meets. Athletes are able to choose events that interest them, and are then allowed to test them out to see if those are the events they would like to pursue for the rest of the season.

Lucas Simpson of Fairmont tells us that, “When I first joined track a few years ago, I was told to be a high jumper and hurdler because I am so tall, but I secretly always wanted to try out pole vault, so I guess we’ll see later how well I do.”

For new athletes, this is the time to decide what events they would like to do. However, for the older ones, this is time to get back into the swing of things. Athlete Jordan Keeley of St. Peter says, “This is my fourth year of being in track and I have always been a thrower. I throw shot put and discus and I am really good at it so I am real excited to get back to it.”

Time trials is the perfect time get a feel for things and to possibly try something new. Time trials allows athletes to find their strengths and weaknesses, which is helpful for finding the right events for every individual.
