Teacher Story: Mrs. Gusso

From my meeting with Mrs. Gusso

New Ulm High has been getting new teachers nearly every year. I decided to go out and talk with a teacher that started here last year. Her name is Bridget Gusso, she is happily married with three kids at the age of 38.

So what where you doing before you started teaching at New Ulm?

“I got my undergrad in Saint Cloud State, I then went and taught in Japan for a year. When I moved back to Saint Paul Minnesota, there were no art positions open so I started teaching pre-school. I did that for five years then started looking into getting my master’s degree. The program that interested me the most was experience education and instead of a thesis, at the end of the program I did a final project. Afterwards, I wrote an undergrad curriculum called COLOR RELEASE: Violence against women and sexual assault. It was like an art therapy course. ItsĀ meaning was to educate, and help survivors process their experience. I wanted to see this implemented in more colleges. After I got my master’s, I started interior design for two years. After that, I became a free-lance designer for ten years. Then I started here.”

Was the transition hard from your past jobs?

“The transition to teaching was rather hard because I was always home with my kids, but I couldn’t do that anymore. I love my job.”

What classes do you teach and which one would you consider your favorite?

“I teach Art Foundation, Yearbook, Kindergarten art, and I also coach dance. All of them are my favorite – each one has special things about them that makes them great.”

Do you plan on teaching hereĀ  for awhile?

“For the future I hope to be here forever.”

As you can see, Mrs. Gusso is a fun, loving, and exciting teacher. Let’s wish her the best and many years of teaching at New Ulm High School!
