The Homecoming dance on Friday, September 30th marked the first dance in the new high school. Another aspect that made this dance so different was that it was held in the lower commons area instead of the gym. I was able to interview a few students and teachers who were present. “It’s really hot! I like the setup otherwise, but it’s really hot!” said Anna Uehling when I asked her how she liked the new setup. Mr. Van Leeuwe also offered his opinion. “It’s cool. Everyone feels like they’re more together and in one place, rather than two levels. There’s less places you can be.”

I asked one of our foreign exchange students, Fadhil Orbandi(who hails from Indonesia) what he thought of the dance. “Insane… no, insane’s not the word. It’s kinda frowned upon in Asia. If you get caught doing this in Asia, it’s… eh.” I also asked Fadhil if he would like to attend another dance. “Oh yeah. Just because… why not?”

Arguably, the highlight of the evening wasn’t the dance taking place in the new school or the commons, but by one of the Seniors in attendance. April Atzenhoefer showed up to the dance wearing a shark suit, and I was lucky enough to get an interview with her. When I asked her why she decided to wear a shark suit to the dance, she responded; “I bought it at Target and I wanted to wear it to school as often as possible. Plus people would find it entertaining at a dance.” Later on in the night, the students in attendance made a circle around our homecoming king and queen, and the DJ played the theme music from “Jaws”, while April ran in between them. When asked about this, she stated: “It was so warm, but so worth it.”

I believe that it is safe to say that the first dance in the new high school was a huge success, and that the students of our school are eagerly awaiting the next one.
