Moving on to the Next Step
This time of year seniors are knee deep in college applications. Getting prepared for applying to colleges can sometimes be very stressful, so here are some helpful tips that all seniors should read before applying.
- Start early. Early applications will receive a decision from the college in advance. This also shows the college you have applied to that you are prepared.
- If your application requires an essay, take your time when writing it. Be sure to have somebody review your essay before you submit it. The writing center is a great place to bring your essays to! Look on the window outside the writing center to see their schedule.
- Take your parents and counselors advice into consideration. They have been through the application process and know whats best when it comes to applying.
- When you are ready to send in a transcript to your desired college, notify your counselor or guidance secretary. The counselor or guidance secretary will be able to send in your transcript and are more than willing to answer any questions you have.
Carson Reed and I talked to Mr. Zeimer, Mr. Bergmann, and Ms. Frank, asking them for their advice on college applications. The first piece of advice they had was for students to do their research and to apply to colleges when it’s free – most colleges use the month of October as a free application month. Mr. Zeimer told us to “tear the band-aid off and just get them done, don’t procrastinate, and keep your windows open” when asked about applications. Zeimer also said to remember to fill out FAFSA, free application for student aid, as soon as possible. FAFSA opened in October, allowing families to complete applications. “Each family should fill it out at least once,” stated Mr. Zeimer.
If any juniors are looking for a head start for next year, Career Explorations, Placement Seminar, and Placement Intern are great classes to take to prepare for life after high school.
Never forget, be confident in yourself!
