The New Ulm Boys Tennis team is looking to build on an impressive 2024 season as they kick off their 2025 campaign. With a 12-5 record last year, including a conference championship win over St. James, the Eagles are determined to repeat their success. The team’s playoff run last season was also one to remember, as they pulled off a 4-3 upset over Prior Lake before falling to Mankato West in a tight 3-4 match.

Despite losing 7 seniors, the Eagles return a solid core of players, including five varsity returners: Charlie Weidman, Daniel Brownfield, Ian Schotzko, Isaac Dittmer, and Eli Dorschner. Junior Charlie Weidman, who plays at number one singles, leads the team and faces some of the toughest competition in the state.

Charlie’s focus for the season is straightforward: “I want to have fun and do my best,” he said. However, he also hopes to end the season with a winning record and another conference championship. “It would be great to go back-to-back, but the main goal is for everyone to improve,” he said.

The Eagles’ season started with a tough 2-5 loss to Mankato West. Despite the defeat, the match was close, with three of the individual games going to extra sets. “It could’ve gone either way,” said Charlie. “We just need to keep pushing forward and stay focused.”

With a mix of experienced players and room for improvement, the New Ulm Eagles are ready to take on the challenge of making this season another memorable one.
