Hot, cold, rain, or shine, the NUHS trap team will be shooting on Monday or Wednesday every week. New coaches opened up a skeet team this year, along with the trap team that has been around for years.

The NUHS trap team has introduced a new head trap coach, James Arndt. There are a lot of other people and coaches that help out because there can be 20 students shooting at once, at 4 different houses. Three houses at the trap range are trap houses, and the fourth house is for skeet shooting.

“We have a lot of new students shooting this year, and the coaching staff might not be large enough to really focus on everyone,” said Arndt. “Over time, we are just gonna have to keep spreading out and try to get the most coaching to kids that really need opposed to the students that shoot high 20’s each round.”

The NUHS trap and skeet team is funded mostly from the Pheasants Forever organization, that are trying to get youth kids the ability to shoot clay birds as a school sport.

Dylan Armstrong was ranked the 1st shooter on the NUHS trap team last year. He was awarded multiple 25-trap badges during the season for shooting perfect rounds and not missing any. The biggest streak he’s had was 3 weeks in a row shooting perfect 25’s.

“This year is going good, I’m still getting back into the swing of things, and the feeling of shooting trap every week,” said Armstrong. “I’m hoping to get back in the rhythm and extend my consecutive rounds of 25. I’ve shot a couple 24 just haven’t gotten that 25 yet this year.

Dylan Armstrong is also shooting for the NUHS skeet team. For all the students, shooting skeet this year is really new to a lot of people because it was never offered before.

“I’m going for a couple of perfect 25s in skeet as well,” said Armstrong. “I’ve been shooting really good each week so far. I really progressed when I put in a wider choke, and think it’s very possible to shoot a 25 in the next couple weeks.”
