While others were getting excited about spring break, the New Ulm Eagles softball team was starting their road to success. Starting Monday, March 10, all high school players began a week-long try-out process. During the week, coaches and other volunteers watch each individual player and rank their performances with ratings. The coaches further evaluate players and place players on teams, which benefits the program in upcoming years.

The varsity softball team has spent many days in the gym, practicing basic dynamics like fielding, hitting, and bunting. However, the team has noted gym practices don’t give the reality of softball. The size of the gym isn’t the same size as a typical softball field, limiting abilities and opportunities. Another change from practicing inside vs. outside is the balls. Inside, the team uses softer balls, preventing breakage in the gym. But this also complicates the way they perform. Using softer balls in the gym makes the ability to read the ball much more complicated.

Ending each week with some fun competition, the team heads up to Eden Praire on Saturdays, March 15, 22, and April 12. The team tackles scrimmages against other various high school teams. The Eagles end each week feeling good about their performances. “These scrimmages allow players to showcase their talent in game-like situations,” said junior pitcher Miley Flor.

The Eagles have set the bar extremely high this year, preparing for a trip to State. Unfortunately, in the past couple of years, the team has fallen short in the Section Championship. However, with confidence, “I think we can make it happen,” junior shortstop Lauren Schmiesing said. “We have an amazing group of girls, and our chemistry is really strong. We work hard at practices and play our best in games.” With 8 seniors, the team is very driven towards the same goal, state.

The team is ready to swing into the season and succeed in their goals.
