One of the highlights of FFA week is the Pancake breakfast; from students to the public, all are welcome. “I like being able to interact with people I don’t normally see,” Junior Adam Mages said. The FFA works with the New Ulm Farm City Hub Club to help put the breakfast on to raise money for the various Hub Club events.
The day before the breakfast FFA members gathered the griddles, tables, and the various food supplies needed. That night, the members set the griddles up, got the sausages cooking, and got all the tables set up. The day of the breakfast FFA members arrive at 6 am to get ready for the rush of hungry patrons. “This event is a great way for us to help the Hub Club promote ag and feed the community,” FFA advisor Mr. Nelson said.
As the pancake breakfast is winding down and everyone is full, FFA Advisor Mr. Nelson prepares to craft his famous large pancake. “It just started one year. It has had many different variations from largest pancake to largest stack of pancakes,” Nelson said.
With two spatulas in hand, he pours the batter on the griddle, filling it completely. Now, the hardest part comes with the flip. He shuffles his two spatulas under the pancake and completes the flip. Mr. Nelson now looks for two growing young boys to take on the challenge of eating the pancake. This year, contestants are Juniors Logan Platz and Adam Mages.

The boys managed to take the pancake down in under 15 minutes. There were many different strategies going into it, but all eventually went out the window when the first bite was taken. “The first part of the pancake is easy, the challenging part is the last quarter of the pancake,” Junior Logan Platz said.
