NUHS spring sports are just around the corner, meaning the track and field season is on the horizon.
Athletes and coaches are preparing for a new season. Assistant coach Rodriguez gets the opportunity to coach a variety of other parts of track, from jumping to sprinting. “I get to see a variety of different athletes. There are distance, sprinters, and throwing/field events. I enjoy going outside every day in the spring when it’s nice out. It makes me happy that everyone gets to participate in track despite their skill level,” Rodriguez said.
“Goals for the team would be it would be pretty cool for us to win a majority of our meets as a team and have more people go to state, maybe even a relay. I enjoyed last year when James Osborne went to state. I feel like everyone should experience participating or even watching the state track meet,” Rodriguez said.
On behalf of the athletes, not only is Track and Field a team sport it’s also an individual sport. Junior Megan Gauert said she’s been preparing for the upcoming season by “running and lifting a lot throughout the winter. I think I have improved a lot coming off of my cross country season last fall.”
“Some personal goals I have set

for myself include breaking the 800-meter school record and potentially qualifying for the state meet. On behalf of the team, I think we really need to work on our competitiveness and push each other in practice. We have some strong relay teams that could be very successful this year if we put in the work at practice. We also have a few people who are doing very well in field events and I’m excited to see how the season plays out and if we can beat some teams that we’ve struggled against in the past,” Gauert said.
The 2025 Track and Field season officially starts at the first practice on March 10, followed by the first meet on March 21 at the Minnesota State University indoor track.
