It all adds up
Coaching Tennis, training for a marathon, learning to teach the next math lesson every day, and helping out with the church. A teacher’s everyday life is very busy. How is one still able to function after teaching all day and then taking part in all of the extra activities?
Mr. Wuestenberg is able to do this, and you would have never guessed he is as busy as he is because he never shows it. Mr. W is always busy; right off the bat, at the start of the school year, he is coaching tennis, connecting with his new students, and cranking out the new math lesson every day. He coaches Girls’ tennis in the fall and Boys’ tennis in the spring.
When coaching season for the girl’s tennis ends in the fall, he is still just as busy. Helping out with his church, Mr. W and his wife are very deeply involved in their church, helping out wherever they can.
When time allows for Mr. W to do all of this he also is training for his marathon. Coach Dubs loves running; he has done marathons in the past. This summer, he is planning to run Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth.
Some may wonder how Mr. W is able to do all of this and still come to school each day at 100%. “I just do this each day by prioritizing what needs to get done first and what’s more important,” he said.
Mr. Wuestenberg came from Huxley, Iowa. As he enjoys it here very much and he loves hanging out with his newly married wife.
Teaching math every day, all day long and enjoying it isn’t an easy task. Mr. Wuestenberg loves teaching at New Ulm Public High School as he has been here for 2 full years now. Mr. W isn’t afraid to admit that there are some challenges that come with trying to teach math.
“Trying to understand what way students are going to learn math the best is the hardest thing; everyone learns a little bit differently,” said Mr. Wuestenberg. “Teaching it up on the board may not come across to the student on how to do it, so I try to find time to go around individually and answer all the of the student’s questions, making sure they understand.”
Mr. W said “liking and understanding math came easy. I originally thought I would enjoy engineering because I liked the math portion, then later decided engineering was not for me and decided I wanted to teach math at some point in life, and so I did.”
Mr. Wuestenberg teaches Geometry and Algebra, saying that “there isn’t a ‘harder’ class per se, it just depends on what that class is learning at that time. This usually goes back and forth between Geometry and Algebra depending on the day.”
Coach Dubs really enjoys his crazy, very busy life each and every day. “The kids here at NUHS are respectful, there are not many troubles trying to work with the kids, and it and easy to work with everyone.”
