FFA members had their 68th annual corn drive on Oct. 10 in which they went out and asked local farmers around New Ulm for corn or money donations.
FFA members were divided into groups of as many as five. Then they were put into townships around New Ulm. Seniors Casey Koop and Tucker Berg were part of the townships of Cottonwood East and Cambria.
“I do this because it’s a day out of school and a chance to do something good for people who need help,” Koop said. “The money we raise goes to Camp True Friends which is a disabled children’s camp. We have raised a lot of money for them in the years that I have been in FFA.”
President of New Ulm FFA Chapter Tucker Berg said, “The reason we choose to donate our money there is because everyone should have the chance to go to a summer camp and have fun. I know as a kid I had so much fun at camps, so for children with disabilities to have fun at camps is everything.”
Camp True Friends offers three different programs around Minnesota Camp Courage in Maple Lake, Camp Friendship in Annandale, and Camp Eden Wood in Eden Prairie. The kids choose their activity interests and level of participation, then they choose where they want to go. The camps offer 5, 6, and 10-day sessions throughout the year.
FFA advisor Holly Covington said, “We have always donated to Camp True Friends, which was originally called Camp Courage. All the corn drives around Minnesota donate their money to them – we do the corn drive because of them.”
