Spike Fest: Clash of Courts

Haala@URBoy, Rizzlerz, SOPHtees, The Groupchat, “It Doesn’t Matter”, No Response, and Team 5. Welcome to the world of volleyball intramurals where the teams play for the best prize one could be offered…a t-shirt.

Volleyball intramurals hit it off the week of Oct. 28 in the New Ulm High School gym. Seven teams showed up to compete. The first two nights were pool play. Teams rotated down the courts, playing every team.

Team No Response ended 0-3. The team played the SOPHtees for its first round of pool play. Unfortunately for the team, they struggled to communicate and put up a large sum of points. The game ended 25-10.

Next, No Response played “It Doesn’t Matter.” At first, it seemed the boys had improved between games, but ultimately, they let the lead of 5-2 go and lost 25-15.

The last game they played was The Groupchat. Before the game started, the boys tried to hype themselves up by getting in a huddle and saying they were going to win, but two minutes into the game, it was prevalent that was not the case. The game ended with a loss of 25-14. “It’s really fun to play volleyball, but my team isn’t that good, so I’m a little upset,” said Sam Ibberson, part of the team No Response. “The entire game, I was telling the boys to communicate, and we just couldn’t, which is definitely why we ended up losing every game,” said Ibberson.

Another team, the SOPHtees, were at the other end of the spectrum. On the first night of pool play, they ended undefeated. The team continued to survive throughout the knockout rounds, winning both games they competed in. By the end of night three the SOPHtees were seeded number one.

At lunch on Nov. 1, the top two teams SOPHtees and Team 5, faced off for the final game of the intramurals. For the majority of the game, Team 5 took the lead while SOPHtees fell behind. Miraculously the SOPHtees came back for the win. “We did it!” said Joey Wise. “I don’t think anyone believed we were going to win, but we pulled it off,” said Wise. The team SOPHtees consisted of Noah Mertz, Joey Wise, Jes Skogland, Kiera Sullivan, Megan Brudelie, Gracie Baker, and Calli Coop. They all received T-shirts as their prize.
