New Ulm Public Airport is one of the high school’s neighbors. Over time, the airport has managed to increase the number of flights it receives as well as the number it takes out thanks to its partnership with Minnesota State University, Mankato.

“The MSU flight program currently has about 800 students enrolled,” said Rob McGregor, who is the manager of North Star Aviation (NSA) in Mankato and also a Fixed Base Operator (FBO). The MSU flight program currently has 44 aircraft for use. The New Ulm Airport receives some of these training flights to practice for approaches and landings.

The City has been working on future projects for the airport. One of these projects is the construction of a new runway, Crosswind Runway 09/27, which will be 120’ wide and 2,480’ long. “This will eliminate the existing 04/22 Runway and provide better wind coverage for pilots at the airport,” said City Engineer Joe Stadheim.

There is also a design for a new fuel system which will promote future hangar development. The New Ulm airport provides around $5.9 million yearly in economic impact and is used by different industries and businesses almost every day.
