New Ulm High School’s advanced welding class is practicing their beads, getting ready for RVS dumpsters that are on the way Thursday, October 24.

NUHS has had a partnership with RVS for a while now and they have never had a problem.

Advanced welding teacher Mr. Nelson kept an example dumpster to show the kids what a good hot weld looks like. He also has some bad examples of welds, like surface welds and welds with porosity. He also showed the students how to grind out the weld if they messed up to give them as many tries as they wanted.

Student Casey Koop, who is down at the CTE center during the first and second hours, works for RVS and helped them tack the dumpsters. “Tacking the dumpsters isn’t hard; we just put them in the jig and drop a small weld in many spots to hold it together,” Koop said.

Without the help of RVS, the dumpsters would be much more challenging. The students would have to tack the dumpsters and then they would have to find someone to give them to. Without the help of Casey Koop and RVS advanced welding wouldn’t be able to make these dumpsters.

Mr. Nelson has been teaching advanced welding for 12 years and said, “I’ve been doing this dumpster unit for about 3 years, so it’s still pretty recent.” Mr. Nelson likes to help with developing welding skills through this dumpster project. It teaches the kids how to weld hot and shows them what it is like to weld in the workforce. Many people don’t realize how important welders are and how big of an impact they make on the world.
