This generation’s next teachers

NUHS students in the Apprentice program work in kindergarten through grade 8 classrooms.

Students at New Ulm High School have the opportunity to act as student teachers.

They can enroll in the Apprentice program for one semester or both during their Senior year, in which they choose whether they would like to explore Washington Learning Center, Jefferson Elementary, or the Middle School.

In apprentice, students go to their desired location for an hour each day. They are basically a student teacher in the classroom, helping the teacher while even leading some lessons.

Mrs. Longtin, who is in charge of this class, said, “As a high school student apprentice, you’re not just a helper in the classroom—you’re a role model, showing younger students the kind of person they can strive to become.”

Mrs. Large’s 4th grade class is silent reading before WIN (What I Need) starts.

Apprentice is a very nice class to choose when you are a Senior if you are thinking of going into a profession that involves teaching or being with kids. Or, it’s a great class to try something new for the experience. “Building connections with the elementary students is essential for their growth—it fosters trust, boosts confidence, and helps create a supportive environment where they feel valued and inspired to learn,” Longtin said.

In the program, you make connections with the kids and teacher that will highlight your Senior year. Senior Apprentice student Marleigh Kokesch said that even though this isn’t something she would normally do, she’s still glad she stepped out of her comfort zone with this. “More students should try Apprentice their senior year,” she said.
