Sprinters stepping into their blocks. Jumpers doing their stretches. Throwers getting ready to throw. All of them, pumped with adrenaline, ready to perform. The first to go is always sprinters, however.
Sprinting is generally the first event off the board, and the MSU meet was no exception. The New Ulm Eagles meet kicked off with a bang, as a blank rang out and the first heat of 60-meter races began. The night continued on, and sprinting races ranged from 60 to 400 meters.
As the meet progressed, it was one big whirl of events. However, early on, throwing took place. At the MSU indoor meet, the only throwing competition was the shotput. Ben Pearson talked about how he preferred outdoor shotput to indoor shotput as the indoor ball is much larger in size and harder to throw.
Another event type going on was jumping. Athletes competed in pole vaulting, long jump, and high jump. Seniors James Osborne and Ethan Lieb took first and second respectively in the high jump. Easton Clark also took second in the long jump.
There are also mid and long-distance events, along with relay races. Senior Cohen Carpenter ran in the 4×200 meter relay, along with junior Bodee Schmiesing. When talking to both, Bodee said, “Relays are pretty fun.” The mid and long-distance races range from 800 to 3200 meters.
Track and field contains a lot of time-consuming events, and meets end up taking a few hours. All of the athletes in track and field are very excited about the spring season. The spring sport has its next meet on April 2 in Fairmont, and this will kick off the outdoor meets. Overall, the athletes are excited for track and field season, and the first was no exception.
