Review: Running with Scissors – Augusten Burroughs
Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs is a memoir about Burrough’s childhood. Unlike many children, Burrough had a very different childhood experience. His mother was a chainsmoker, who spent her time writing confessional poetry, and his father was an alcoholic professor. This book is so interesting, because it takes you through this young boy’s adolescents years and his emotions through abuse, neglect, divorce, and confusion. Burrough grew up to be a very successful author, however, people often overlook what hardships it took for him to become the man he is today. This book is very deep and covers a range of intense topics such as: sexuality, suicide, abuse, depression, rape, and neglect. If you don’t like reading about such negative topics, this book will not be for you. Overall, I believe this story is phenomenal. This novel made me laugh and cry, it provokes so many emotions. I couldn’t help placing myself into this little boy’s shoes and reliving everything he went through. The imagery Burrough uses is amazing and the novel itself is beautifully written. I highly recommend this book.
