When you think about the Winter sports seasons, you may think about basketball or hockey season. But some sports get overlooked. One of these sports includes the dance team.

The New Ulm Eagles Dance team started back up in the 2015/16 season after the team was shut down due to a lack of participants. Since then, the dance team has been trying to gain back popularity which has been going relatively well.

This year and in previous years, the team has mostly been made up of younger dancers. In 2021 the dance team graduated six seniors. Since then, it has been more challenging for the dance to keep the older members.

This year the team is being led by their oldest member and only junior, Leanna Brown.

Another younger member, Brelyn Schmid, is a Freshman and in her second year of the dance team. “I am super excited for the up-and-coming season. We have been working hard. I am excited to see how we do this season,” said Schmid.

The New Ulm Eagles dance team was scheduled to perform at halftime of the girl’s basketball game vs. Tri-City United on November 29; unfortunately, the game was postponed due to incoming weather. However, their first competition occurred on November 30, 2022, in St.James. For many of the dancers, it was their first time competing in a high school competition. Overall the team did well in the first competition placing 4th in varsity high kick, 5th in Varsity Jazz, and 1st in JV jazz!

This season looks good for the dance team, with tons of new talent and eager dancers! Keep an eye out for them at halftime of basketball games, and always remember to appreciate overlooked sports!
