In the microbiology class, the students learn several techniques for growing and examining bacteria. They have learned how to swab, streak, and spread bacteria onto Petri dishes and be able to determine the bacteria growth on the plate the next day.

In the most recent lab, the students swabbed their throats and streaked the swab onto a Petri dish made up of sheep blood and then placed it into an incubator. The next day, the students were able to observe some bacteria growth on the plates by seeing a clear yellow streak, meaning there were strep bacteria present. “It was cool to see how much bacteria grew on each of the plates,” April Rose said. The students plan to use the techniques they have been learning to advance in bacteria testing and growth.
