New Ulm Eagles roll over Blue Earth Buccaneers

Colton Benson keeps scoring streak alive

An Eagle’s home victory over the Blue Earth Bucs in hoops Friday, Feb. 10 helped solidify their presence in the Big South Conference.

The Buccaneers were ahead on a tight lead throughout most of the first half but Colton Benson and James Osborne led the way to take back the lead near the end of the first half. In the second half, Colton and James led the way in scoring along with a couple of knockdown threes from Easton Clark leading to a blowout victory for the Eagles. “They brought a good first half, but we dominated in the second half,” Clark said.

Colton Benson broke the at-home single-game scoring record, bringing him even closer to the all-time scoring record for the New Ulm basketball team. Benson netted 41 points, most being scored with his jump shot either from the free-throw line, mid-range, or a three. “I was just feeling it, especially in the second half when their big man was talking at me,” Benson said.

If he keeps his scoring streak alive, Benson could beat the record of 1443 points held by Reece Melby by the end of this season if they go far in playoffs.

“I know it seems like a lot but my team makes it very easy for me to score that many points in some games. I believe that I could beat it by the end of the season if we keep on playing like this as a team,” Benson said.
