Dress-Up Days at NUHS help beat the winter blues

With the dreadful and cold winter months that take place in Minnesota, a person can’t help but dream about summer and warmer weather. Student council wants to help students and staff beat the winter blues. The student council is sponsoring a “Summer in February” week from February 5th to the 9th. The week is full of fun events such as dress-up days, bean bags, a photo booth, and a school dance on Friday night. The dress-up days for the week start with a comfy day on Monday, Hick day on Tuesday, USA day on Wednesday, Throwback BOTC day on Thursday, and ends with Floral Friday. With fun dress up days taking place, some questions are raised. How does Student council decide which dress up days to pick? What do the students and staff think of the dress up days?

Mrs. Longtin, a student council advisor, was able to give some insight. Mrs. Longtin said that the student council likes to plan dress-up days to “instill some fun and school spirit” in the school. When considering what dress up days to choose, Mrs. Longtin said that the student council looks at “what is popular and what we are hearing kids are wanting.” Mrs. Longtin added that if there is a certain dress-up day that a student or staff member thinks would be fun, they can “talk to a student council representative, and then it is up to the representative to bring it back to a full student council meeting.”

Junior Student Council member Abbey Frauenholtz was able to explain how the student council meetings work. Abbey said: “Student Council members bring dress-day ideas to meetings and we all vote.” She added, “We factor in what dress-up days will get the most kids to participate, and if they will be approved by Mr. Bergman.”

Physical Education teacher Mrs. Olson thinks that dress-up days are a really awesome idea. “I think it brings the comraderie of the school together, and there is a little bit more cohesion which is really fun to see as a teacher,” she said. When asked what she would change about the days this week she said, “I would just change the name of hick day because it could be a little bit of a touchy name, maybe change it to farmer day or something along those lines.

Junior Joey Batt explained what she thought about this weeks dress up days. “I really like them,” she said. “I think it’s getting everyone excited for the dance.” After being asked what she would change about this week she said: “Some people didn’t really know what to do for hick day so maybe we could have done something other than that. A lot of people still dressed up though, so I think it was still good.”

Overall, Dress-up days seem to be pretty popular at NUHS, especially during homecoming week when the school spirit is at an all-time high. Dress-up days are a fun way to change things up and break away from an everyday routine. Students seem to enjoy having days where they can dress crazy and have some fun without being judged. The student council is hoping that the February dress-up days will help generate some excitement for the Hawaiian themed dance on Friday night.
