Senior Year – The Final Chapter

A New Beginning

January 2, 2018

The previous three years of high school went by in the blink of an eye, and senior year will be the same. As the class of 2018 comes to their last year of high school, there are a lot of emotions and uncertainties about what the next years will bring. High school seniors are making some of the biggest decisions of their lives and for most of the seniors and their parents, it came sooner than anticipated.

Senior year is the year all the “lasts” begin. The last first day of high school, the last homecoming, the last time putting your team jersey on, the last BOTC, the last prom, and the last time seeing all of your classmates that you grew up with. “I’m excited to move on to a new chapter in my life, but it will be hard to leave all of my friends,” said Ashlyn Berg. It will be an emotional year for everyone as we all prepare for college and begin to say goodbye to our friends, teachers, and our school. Senior year is a time to make memories that will be remembered for the rest of your life.

As senior year is close to almost have way over, senior slack is already starting to kick in. I interviewed Mr. Ziemer and asked him what advice he would give seniors to not fall into the senior slack and he said, “It is important to keep pushing yourself, select courses that you have a high interest in and use this year as a resource.” This is the year where seniors start to plan for the future before going off on their own. I asked Mr. Ziemer what advice he would give to seniors during their senior year and he said, “Enjoy your time as a high school senior, it goes by very fast. Be open for opportunities to benefit you in the future.”

The Battle of the Classes, which occurs every Fall, is always a tremendous highlight of the school year, especially for seniors. With the pressure to win there is a lot of excitement and emotions going through the seniors’ heads. I asked Keaton Knaak how he felt during the last battle of the classes: “I had butterflies in my tummy ’cause I was sad it was over,” he said. It will definitely be a memorable school event that all the seniors will miss.
