New language teacher Mr. Japs comes to New Ulm High School teaching Spanish

Unique new Spanish Teacher Mr. Japs joined the teaching staff this fall at New Ulm High School. Mr. Japs had heard about the job through an online job fair. He attended the job fair in June, applied for the job in New Ulm, talked to Mr. Bergman and within a week was on his way to check things out.

The reasoning Mr. Japs had for teaching Spanish was very unique. About ten years ago Mr. Japs made a promise to himself that whatever language he learned, he would teach. It turns out that he was really good at Spanish in college, so Voila!

The only problem that came in the way of his promise is that a certain level of knowledge is needed to teach a language rather than just learning a language which caused a great challenge.

“It’s a lot of doing stuff for the first time and not knowing how it’s going to turn out,” Mr. Japs said. Japs says that some days are better than others and you have to have the belief and confidence to know that your doing it correctly even if you haven’t done it before. He tries his best to have faith in himself every day when sometimes he may not.

“It’s everything I hoped it was going to be and more in a good way,” Japs said. He enjoys getting to learn about the students as each class has its own unique groups of people. It is rewarding for him to see his students putting in good work and having a back in forth between the students and himself.
