Mr. Briggs Weighs In on New Woodshop

When school started this year, there were a lot of things that were still not set up yet. One of those things is the wood shop. This wood shop class has a new teacher this year, Mr. Briggs. Mr. Briggs is also one of the science teachers that came over to the new school this year. Here is the interview that we conducted with Mr. Briggs.

  1. In your opinion is this shop better and more improved than the last one?

“Well Dylan, I was not in the other shop much and so I don’t want to speculate.  I hear that it is smaller than the previous one.  I’m confident that the shop will be improved because of the new shop teacher. “

  1. When will the woodshop be fully ready for basic classwork?

“At this point, the shop is up and running for basic classwork.  Machines are working, ventilation system works, we are still waiting on air compressors to run the time saver and down drafter.”

  1. Are you excited to be the new woodshop teacher?

“Yes, I’m very excited.  It’s a new challenge for me personally and professionally.  I really enjoy working hands on and with wood products.  I hope I can get the students excited also.”

  1. What is your favorite thing about the new woodshop?

“There are many things, but I enjoy being the only teacher, and the current students are setting a standard for how the shop will run in the new high school.”

  1. What is your least favorite thing about the woodshop?

“I haven’t ran into a lot of least favorite things, but I am concerned about where the students will store their projects, etc..”

  1. What were your thoughts about having to start the new school year with an incomplete woodshop?

“Well I suppose I had mixed emotions, but I realized  how it was one of many things incomplete, and so you just have to stay patient and positive and trust that it will get complete in  a timely fashion.”

  1. What is the biggest advice that you can give to kids that have never worked in a woodshop before?

“Well I guess I would consider understanding overall shop safety, and not being afraid of what you don’t know.  This is a great place to learn and is not just a shop for boys.”
