Work Hard, Dream Big

2017-2018 Boys Basketball Season

February 14, 2018

The New Ulm boys varsity has a record of 9 wins and  11 losses so far this season. Their coach Mr. Foley said: ” There were successes in the early season along with some road bumps, but the team overall has been making tremendous progress.” This long season had led to continuous improvement that will benefit the future of NUHS boy basketball.

This year the team will be losing 3 senior boys: Conner Foley, Matthew Janke and Andrew Peters. The team overall has about 35 junior varsity players, so there is no shortage of help to fill the gaps. To deal with the loss of these 3 players, Foley said: “Every year has been a concern because as a coach you tend to lean on the upper class men, but every year it always works as the kids put in time and effort.”

Mr. Foley enjoys being a coach for the boys varsity team and loves spending time with the kids. His love for sports and being in the gym has made him put his full time and effort to make the team as solid as he can. With the practices being right after school until 5, there is a lot of time put into this sport. Each practice starts out with stretching, then some warm ups and then various activities such as ball handling, passing, shooting, as well as 4 on 4 or 3 on 2 drills. This makes for a good competitive practice.

Along with that, Mr. Foley also said that “restating games,” and coming up with game and practice plans takes up a lot of time too. With restating games Foley said it includes “going home and watching the games over, looking closely over at the plays and what the players do.” With all this being said the next game is against Marshall February 13 at 7:15 in Marshall.

The game that will determine if our team goes to sections will be against Hutchinson on February 20. Hope to see you all supporting the NUHS boys basketball team.
