Artist of the month

Trying to make a hobby a living

Pearl Kowalke is a junior at New Ulm High School and is taking her interest and trying to get a living out of her artwork in the future. Kowalke was the New Ulm High School artist of the month for March. “I started to draw and paint because of my older sister. She inspired me to start,” Kowalke said.

This artwork highlights the importance of being mindful that life goes on and that people are learning daily and to live every moment like it’s your last.

Pearl Kowalke’s art piece is called “Back In My Day.” The painting is about “a woman looking sadly back on her life, only through the good parts which fail to highlight the bad aspects of life as well,” Kowalke said. “This is similar to looking through rose-colored glasses. She only seems sad when looking at the good parts of her life but then chooses to ignore the bad. This artwork highlights the importance of being mindful that life goes on and that people are learning daily and to live every moment like it’s your last,” Kowalke said.

Her inspiration? She originally had to do a new painting after forgetting her old one at school when she thought it was due on Friday over a snow break. She thought there was no way out than to completely start over on a new piece over the weekend. She scrolled for hours on Pinterest before coming across this fun grandma in orange glasses and red, vibrant lipstick and thought, “Bingo, I’ve got my piece.”
