Let there be sun!

New Ulm High School girls softball starts tryouts hoping to get onto the field as soon as possible.

April 3, 2023

Last year during this time of the year, there was no snow on the ground and spring sports were getting started with some great weather to work with. However, this year looks a little different.

With snowstorm after snowstorm this year we are looking at yet another snowfall coming at the end of this week. The softball fields are piled up with snow as we speak and with more coming who knows how long it will take for it all to melt down and dry up for games to take place.

For now, the girl’s softball team is having tryouts in the High School gym from 6-8 working on fielding, hitting, skilled work, and other drills they are hoping to take onto the softball fields this spring. They had their first scrimmage on Saturday, March 18 up in the cities inside a dome since the fields are still covered in snow.

Though no one is able to get outside at the moment everyone is making fun of being stuck inside and making the most out of it. The fields will be taken care of as soon as the snow melts down, they use more sand to suck up all of the water and other tools to make the fields game ready.

Not only is the girl’s softball team stuck practicing inside until they are able to get games scheduled outside. But the boy’s baseball team, track team, boy’s tennis team, and golf are stuck inside as well. The gym space is very limited to all of the spring sports here at New Ulm High School so working around everyone’s schedule gets to be really busy.

Here is a look into a track meet inside. The Eagles had their first track meet  Friday, March 24. Emily Pearson said that she is ready to be outside in the nicer weather but you don’t have to worry about rain or any other weather inconvenience when inside. She also mentioned how starting inside for the first track meet can be difficult when you are able to be outside. Emily also set a new record for Pole Vaulting at 10’6 which is very exciting.
