Bill Clinton was president, Michael Jordan re-joined the NBA, and helmet hair was the style for women. That is how long it had been since the New Ulm boys basketball team won the Big South Conference, that was until Friday, Feb. 18, when the boys finally ended the drought and won the conference.
New Ulm has been faced with a challenging Marshall program for many years. Getting the edge over them and finally defeating them was a great win for the boys. The atmosphere at New Ulm High School was electric, loud, and exciting. It was not your typical New Ulm basketball game.
The New Ulm Eagles were led by sophomores James Osborne and Colton Benson, with Osborne putting up 20 points and Benson 32 points. Excellent grit from all players, defense, and rebounding helped the Eagles top the Marshall Tigers in a 72-61 victory to win the Big South Conference.
When asked about what this does for the future of New Ulm basketball, Coach Dennis said, “Those young kids at the game are going to see and remember this moment; they do not understand the struggle New Ulm basketball has faced over the past years. To them, this is what New Ulm basketball is and sets the tone for the next ten plus years.”
“I believe it just took the right group of guys with the right mentality at the right time,” Dennis said when asked why he feels it took New Ulm so long to achieve a great accomplishment like this for the basketball program. “We have a long way to go, we have a lot we must work and improve on by the end of the year, but for now, this is a great achievement.”

Dennis is very proud of the boys and the work they have put in. The future for New Ulm basketball is exciting.
