New Girls Soccer Coach

Amber Gremmels

October 26, 2021

In the 2021 season, the New Ulm Girls Soccer Team welcomed Amber Gremmels to the coaching staff. Gremmels has taken over coaching the junior varsity team at NUHS, as well as assisting the varsity team. In years past, Gremmels has been a soccer referee but stopped due to her wanting to help players get better, not just tell them what they did wrong. Gremmels has always been an advocate for women’s sports and wants to do her part to get more girls involved in soccer.

The JV girls had a successful season with more wins than losses, the teams plays together as one consecutive team. The JV team had a tournament this past weekend, “The JV girls showed determination and grit to play 3 hours of soccer with a maximum of two subs. They never let up, and walked away with two wins and a tie against some teams they said they were scared of,” Gremmels said.

Amber was a latecomer to soccer, not starting until 9th grade because her brother played, and she thought he and his friends were the most important people in the world. She played the rest of high school before college.

When it was time for Amber to go to college, she tried a year without playing soccer while attending MSU-Mankato, but she was missing the sport so much that she transferred to the University of Minnesota-Morris to play there.

This is where she said she actually learned soccer skills and didn’t rely on just running as fast as she could in 1 v 1’s. She was able to spend 1 year coaching with this team as well. She also coached a JV team in Hutchinson and Sartell, also. She spent the 2019 season reffing, and hated that she couldn’t talk to the players about what they could do to improve. Amber did not coach last year because she had a baby, but was happy to see the JV job posted this year.

Gremmels is excited to see the season through, the JV girls have their final game of the 2021 season on Thursday, October 14th at 4:45 p.m. Going into their final game Gremmels always tells the girls, “Move your feet and you’ll never get beat.”
