We’ve all heard of Sherlock Holmes, and seen him in plenty of different movies or tv shows or read of him in books, but how many different adaptations of Sherlock Holmes are there? The answer to that question is actually much longer than you’d expect. The character originated in a series of stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle. He wrote the character into sixty different stories that fill up four novels and five volumes, all published in between 1887 and 1927. These stories follow Sherlock Holmes, and his Sidekick Doctor John Watson as they go on adventures and solve mysteries and cases. Since then, original stories Sherlock Holmes has been depicted in several comic books, in one of which he shows up to congratulate Batman. Currently there are roughly 109 different Sherlock Holmes movies and short films that have been made between 1900 and 2015. One of the most recent and well known Sherlock Holmes adaptations is portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes, and Jude Law as Watson. There is also said to be 2 more Sherlock Holmes movies on the way, one of them being the third installment to Robert Downey Jr.’s character, and the other being a comedy starring Will Ferrell.  Regarding television there have been about 20 different TV shows and mini series from 1951 to 2014, a few of them still airing today. One of these shows being Sherlock, a more modern day adaptation, Portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson.
