Starting Careers Early

April 26, 2019

New Ulm High School students are now able to job shadow the careers they hope to pursue through a class called Internship Experience. This is the first year that this class has been offered to students. Through this class, students are able to follow and assist workers at a specific location that they are interested in. This class allows students to get a good feel for the career and helps them decide if the job is a good fit for them in the future.

High School teacher Kelsey Brandt was put in charge of running the class this year. “I think that it’s a good class, especially for kids that are ready to get out and be in a business,” Brandt said. The class has worked out very well so far, especially for the first year. The only problem was setting everything up in the beginning. “A few students struggled to find a place to go that they were interested in. It was difficult to get in touch and set up a schedule with some businesses as well, but everything ended up working out,” Brandt said.

The students also seem to really enjoy the new class. Students go to a wide variety of businesses, from car shops to the hospital. Senior Greg Miller volunteers and helps out at Paul’s Electric. “I really enjoy going to Paul’s Electric every day. I have learned a lot since I started. They actually ended up offering me a full-time job after high school,” Miller said. The class is expected to continue on next year and offer even more opportunities for future students.
