The Future Officers of FFA

April 16, 2019

At first glance, this might look like any other ordinary FFA meeting, but it isn’t. This is a special type of meeting that only comes once a year. That’s right, on April 8th members of the New Ulm FFA chapter voted for next year’s team of officers.

This year, a new system for voting was implemented. In the past, votes were recorded on a piece of paper than tallied up. This year, the votes were collected electronically. Mr. Nelson, the New Ulm FFA adviser, said they switched to the new system of voting because “the technology is here and we want to use it to streamline the process. The main factors (for the switch) were the ease of collection and saving time tallying votes. This method still allowed for accountability and accuracy.” This new method took approximately thirty minutes off of the voting process.

HERE THEY ARE – a list of the new team of officers.

This has been a long-standing tradition with FFA. Ever since the beginning, there has been a team of officers that have given leadership and guidance to the rest of the members. According to the official FFA handbook, there are six constitutional officers. This means that every FFA chapter must have at least these six positions. They include President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Reporter, and Sentinel. Regional chapters may also elect other officers if needed. New Ulm FFA includes a Historian, Officer at Large, and Parliamentarian along with the constitutional positions.

Any FFA member can run to be an officer but they need to go through a few steps. First, they need to fill out an officer application. Then they turn that in and schedule an interview. The last step is to complete a formal interview with a nominating committee. After all this, it’s up to the members to decide who is best suited for the position via election.

During the actual election process, if a member does not get elected for the position they want, they move on to the next round of elections to try to run for a lesser position. This way, it is easier to get elected than a traditional type of election.

Some may not agree with the results, but that comes naturally with an election. Every candidate is very qualified to be an officer. The future of the New Ulm FFA is in good hands with this new team of officers.
